Description
The story blends futuristic sci-fi with a classic fairy tale, and as someone who’s a sucker for fairy tale retellings, it was the perfect fit for me. The characters, especially Cinder herself, felt so unique and fresh, with a compelling mix of strength, vulnerability, and resilience. The twist on Cinderella’s story, combined with action, romance, and the larger political intrigue, made the series one of my favorites as a young teen. Cinder was one of my first adventures into the sci-fi and political drama genre as a young reader. While Cinder is a book that is written for a younger audience, I greatly enjoy taking the opportunity to return to my childhood, which is why it remains on my shelf even now.
I first read Cinder by Marissa Meyer in 6th grade, and from the moment I opened the book, I was completely hooked. I begged my mom to take me to the library to checkout the rest of those books that same week. After I finished reading the books I had borrowed from the library I dragged my mom to the half-priced bookstore so that I could buy the whole series with my allowance. Cinder also made me realize that I have a deep love for fairytales beyond just the classics. After reading Cinder I found myself seeking out modern fairytale retellings as I continued to grow up, at this point in time I have probably read well over 30 retellings.
