My “chill pills” have sat on my bookshelf since December of 2021. They were given to me just two days after I got out of the hospital, following a 5-day stay. The gift came from my high school best friend, and though we don’t talk as much anymore, her thoughtful present is something I still turn to often.

The jar is filled with small green and white capsules, each one containing a handwritten note. Every note is a little pick-me-up, a personal message from her to me. The sentiment and love she put into each one always leave me feeling appreciated, nostalgic, and grounded in our friendship—even though we’ve drifted apart as time has passed. Whenever I’m having a particularly rough day or week, I’ll grab one and read it. No matter what, it always makes me smile and brings a little spark of joy back into my life.
